Our Story — The Tin Shed Café
If you walk down Lithgow’s main street, you’ll find a tall old tin-clad building standing proudly among the modern shopfronts. Its corrugated walls and timber bones have seen more than a century of life, long before it became the bustling café it is today.
This is The Tin Shed Café but its story begins long before the coffee machine ever switched on.
A building with a rich past
Built in the late 1800s, the structure first served as one of the main produce stores of the Central West. Families, farmers, and local workers came here for supplies, tools, feed, and goods that kept the region moving. Later, it transformed into a well-known antique store, its shelves stacked with treasures from times gone by.
Historically known as Baldock’s, the building passed through families like the Phillips and the Dives, each leaving their own fingerprints on its story.
And through it all, the building remained a rare survivor one of the last standing examples of the Federation Carpenter Gothic warehouse style that once dominated the region.
Its history is etched into its tin panels, its timber frames, and the soft industrial hum that still lingers inside.
A New Chapter Begins
In its second life, The Tin Shed Café became a place where locals gather, travellers rest, and strangers turn into familiar faces. A place where breakfast feels hearty, coffee tastes like comfort, and the pies and burgers bring people back again and again.
Over the years, The Tin Shed has earned its share of recognition
- TripAdvisor Best Café
- NRMA Top Five Cafés of the Central West
- Top Five Pies of the Central West
- Best Breakfast in Lithgow, 2025
These awards are appreciated but what truly matters is the feeling people get when they walk through the door. Warm. Welcomed. Hungry and then happy.
With a menu that’s over 90% made in-house, The Tin Shed stays true to honest food made thoughtfully and generously.
Stone & River Farm — The Heart Beneath It All
Just 15 minutes away in Little Hartley, another chapter of the story is unfolding.
This is Stone & River Farm, Maya and John’s passion project and the soil beneath their farm-to-plate vision. The farm is home to Australian White sheep, developing produce, soon to be organic fresh eggs a the possibilities are endless.
It’s a place where things grow slowly and deliberately.
Where good food begins long before it reaches the café kitchen.
Stone & River isn’t fully realised yet, but its spirit is already present in the café: in the produce they plan to grow, the ethics guiding their ingredients, and the dream of sharing truly local food with their community.
